Goal Statement: It’s my professional goal to enhance medical learning experiences with health care simulation using experiential learning frameworks and develop a way to foster the same learning attitudes in other learning contexts.
MAKIFICATION
Stop the Bleed Improvised Tourniquet Activity (CLICK HERE)
I chose to create a lesson on tourniquet application using the Makification framework (Cohen et. al, 2017) for public school faculty as supported by Texas legislation H.B. No. 496 requirement for training of public-school personnel to control bleeding (Hawkins, 2019). All theoretical principles and framework are embedded in the lesson. I referenced the below sources to support critical content concerning stop the bleed concepts.
Upon conducting further investigation into the implementation and preparation of the “Stop the Bleed” course, there are logistical concerns to take into consideration. A Stop the bleed course requires an instructor to be credentialed and affiliated with (a) The American College of Surgeons Bleeding Control Basics (B-Con) $0.00 - $50.00, (b) The First Care Provider organizations suite of courses $79.99, or (c) The You Are the Help Until Help Arrives suite of courses joint program of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, FEMA, and the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences) which appears to be online and free (DHS, 2020). Total course cost is $0 79.99 per instructor. The NAEMT guidelines for a B-CON course are 1:8 student to instructor ratio (NAEMT, 2020). The improvised tourniquet activity should align with module 4 principles and concepts of bleeding control (FEMA, 2020). The improvised tourniquet activity should be cost efficient due to the equipment being sourced from classroom materials. However, a class size of 8 at a time may cost $10.00 per student in classroom supplies which averages to $80.00. The overall initial cost considering an allocation of $1500.00 allocation to cover airfare, per-diem, and lodging for one faculty to become instructor certified and hold a class of 8 for this section is $1659.00 on the high end and $80.00 x hourly rate on the low -end (if certification is obtainable through distance learning). However, subsequent cost for this section of training is $80.00 per group of 8 learners x hourly rate of teacher.
